transport requirements

Below is information regarding transporting horses to and from Jersey within the EU/Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom, together with downloadable forms from DFDS.

How to book - jersey/uk

For the booking of horses, initially the two forms below will need to be completed – 'CASH BOOKING REQUEST' and 'Channel Islands Animal Shipment Request Form'. These should be filled out to the best of your ability and returned to jersey.fbookings@dfds.com. The jersey.fbookings@dfds.com email is our primary method of booking ferries without an account and will go to a centre in the UK dedicated to making bookings for routes in and out of Jersey.

For shipments Jersey-UK, you will need:

  • Your completed CI Animal Shipment Request Form
  • A completed consignment note (blank and sample form attached), in the goods      description field please list the horse, its name, and its passport  number/ULI
  • The horse passport available to view and be copied by port staff
  • [TRAVEL TO UK] Customs clearance in place, you may use your customs broker of      choice, or DFDS typically recommends using Brittany Ferries. If you choose to use Brittany Ferries you must contact them prior to travel on ptm.imports@brittanyferries.gg or 02393  382710 with your travel details and the documents above
  • [TRAVEL TO JERSEY] in addition to the above documents you will require a JCE375  form to be completed with the appropriate details. You may also make a      pre-arrival declaration at customs.gst.gov.je or via email at rgc@gov.je

For ease, please send copies of the above documents to jersey.super@dfds.com and Portsmouth.super@dfds.com prior to travel, quoting your booking number, as well as bringing the documents with you on the day of sailing.

There is some more pertinent information available below, and if you have any more in-depth questions jersey.fbookings@dfds.com will be able to answer them for you.

DFDS Statement regarding Customs:

DFDS cannot verify whether your documentation is completed correctly or advise on alternative forms you may require.  Please note that DFDS acts solely as a carrier and does not provide customs clearance services for any shipments.   All goods moving into or out of Jersey and the UK are subject to customs controls and must be declared in accordance with local legislation.

As Jersey is not part of the UK or the EU for customs or VAT purposes, movements between Jersey and the UK are classed as international shipments, and declarations are required both ways.

A licensed third-party customs agent must be appointed by the shipper or  consignee.   Common agents include Ferryspeed, Portico, or others of your choosing.  If you previously used Condor Logistics as your agent, they may still be able to act for you under DFDS — please confirm with them directly.

horse transportation in/out of Jersey - EU/Northern Ireland

The below links give full guidance on the requirements for both movements in and out of the EU or Northen Ireland.

Taking a horse to the EU or Northern Ireland from Jersey

A time line is detailed, to ensure the exporter leaves enough time to complete all the steps, from the Export Health Certificate application form, required blood tests, plus other required forms and final inspection and completion of Export Health Certificates (EHC) .

There are different Export Health Certificates depending on whether the move is temporary (under 30 or 90 days) or more permanent (over 90 days), also dependant on competition type.
From the Gov.UK website the EHC options are detailed below:

ENRTY TO THE EU FROM JERSEY (also GB)
Different certificates relevant to the duration stay and activity they are involved in:
1.
Movement back to the European Union and Northern Ireland of registered competition horses after temporary import into GB for a period of less than 90 days to participate in an event organised by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI): certificate 8434 - GOV.UK
2.
Movement back to the European Union and Northern Ireland of registered horses for racing, competition and cultural events after temporary import to the GB for a period of less than 30 days: certificate 8433 - GOV.UK
3. Key point: Anything beyond 30–90 days is generally not considered “temporary” and will require permanent export/import certification :
Equine animals not intended for slaughter to the European Union and Northern Ireland: certificate 8431 - GOV.UK

Bringing a horse to Jersey from the EU or Northern Ireland
The exporter must contact the EU vet well in advance, to discuss the timings involved in the pre-export clinical examination, whether any blood tests are required, and the final signing of a different health certificate their side.
Again there are different EHC for temporary or permanent movements.
ENTRY TO JERSEY (also GB) FROM THE EU

1.
GBHC660_EQU-R_Re-entry_after_temporary_export_of_registered_or_unregistered_equine__v1.0_Aug-23.pdf - Movement back to Jersey after temporary export to the EU for a period of less than 90 days to participate in an event organised by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), or less than 30 days for registered horses taking place in racing, competition, and cultural events.
2.
GBHC661 EQU-UNR Temporary or permanent admission of a registered equine from the EU v1.1 Oct-23 – temporary as defined in the line above, permanent is anything beyond 30-90 days.

Exporters are advised to use an export / import agent to help with the export process,  and they need an agent in the EU to notify the BCP (Border Control Post) on their behalf and to make sure customs notifications are made.
