Understand Your Horse - Why Horses Behave the Way They Do
Would you like to understand why horses behave the way they do?
A better understanding of horse behaviour can help you improve your relationship with your own horse and give you the confidence to make more informed decisions about riding, handling, training and competing. It can also help you make changes to management that support your horse’s health and wellbeing.
You will learn about:
- Different aspects of horse behaviour (including play, sleep, social life, feeding and movement)
- The horse’s behavioural needs
- How management and environment can influence behaviour
- An introduction to behaviour problems and why they develop
- Recognising signs of pain, stress and fear
- Practical ways changes in management can improve behaviour and wellbeing
This evening talk is suitable for horse owners, students and equestrian professionals who would like to learn more about horse behaviour.
The talk will last around 2 hours with an interval to buy refreshments at the bar.

About Justine:
Justine Harrison CEBC ABTC-AAB is a behaviour professional with a lifelong love of horses. She is a Certified Equine Behaviour Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, and an Accredited Animal Behaviourist with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. She founded Understand Horses – an education platform providing courses in equine behaviour and welfare – which provides CPD for organisations including the British Horse Society, World Horse Welfare, The Brooke and the RSPCA as well as accredited courses for equine professionals and horse owners. A 'Fear Free’ Certified Equine Professional, Justine specialises in low-stress handling and behaviour modification, and acts as an expert consultant in legal disputes and court cases involving equine behaviour and welfare. She works internationally, mentoring students and behaviour professionals, and contributes regularly to equine magazines through articles and expert commentary.
Training Track Hire at The Jersey Race Club - Grosnez
Times: Weekdays 13:00–17:00, Saturdays 13:00–15:00. Closed on Sundays.
Supervision: Riders must be supported by a qualified insured instructor. The instructor’s name and qualifications must be provided at the time of booking.
Facilities: The horse box area may be used for loading and unloading.
Liability: All riders use the facility at their own risk.
Cost: £10 per horse, per session, payable at the time of booking.

Drag hunting season usually starts in mid-October and continues through autumn and winter, finishing in the spring. If you wish to avoid jumping there is nearly always a way around. When the hunt is mid-season we may not have a line suitable for the novice – a notice will be placed on the website under the relevant line. We suggest you do the sponsored ride, picnic ride and then the cubbing lines, as a great way to ease you and your horse into hunting.

The BSJA Jersey Show Ground is situated in the centre of Jersey within easy reach of all parts of the Island. The jumping arena is irrigated throughout the season and always maintained in tip-top condition, rivalling the best English venues. From April to September we run competitive events on our grass arena and in the winter from October to March we move to our All Weather Surface to run winter heights events and cater for a membership with a wide range of ages and abilities. Riding horses and ponies from novice to experienced Grade A.
