Jersey Horse Association – Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy

1. Introduction

The Jersey Horse Association (the ‘Association’) is committed to promoting equality, embracing diversity, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to participate fully.

We recognise that equestrian sport should be accessible to all, regardless of background or personal characteristics. This policy reflects our commitment to eliminating discrimination and fostering a culture of respect, fairness, and inclusion across all activities.

  

2. Purpose of This Policy

This policy aims to:

  • Promote equality of opportunity for all members and participants
  • Prevent discrimination, harassment, and victimisation
  • Encourage respect for diversity and individual differences
  • Ensure inclusive practices across all Association activities
  • Provide guidance on roles and responsibilities

  

3. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All  Association members and participants
  • Coaches, volunteers, and officials
  • Committee members and event organisers
  • Parents, guardians, and carers
  • Visitors and contractors

It applies to all activities, events, training sessions, competitions, and communications carried out under the Association.

  

4. Principles

4.1 Equality

Everyone has the right to be treated fairly and with dignity, regardless of personal characteristics.

4.2 Diversity

We value and respect differences, recognising that diversity strengthens our community and enhances participation.

4.3 Inclusion

We are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, supported, and able to contribute.

4.4 Zero Tolerance

The Association has zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, bullying, or exclusion.

  

5. Protected Characteristics

The Association recognises the importance of protecting individuals from discrimination based on characteristics including:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender identity and expression
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Race (including colour, nationality, ethnic origin)
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

  

6. Forms of Unacceptable Behaviour

The following will not be tolerated:

  • Direct or indirect discrimination
  • Harassment (verbal, physical, or online)
  • Bullying or intimidation
  • Victimisation
  • Exclusion or unfair treatment
  • Offensive  language, jokes, or behaviour

All concerns will be taken seriously and addressed promptly.

  

7. Responsibilities

7.1 The Association Committee

  • Ensure this policy is implemented, monitored, and reviewed
  • Promote equality and inclusion in decision-making
  • Address breaches of the policy appropriately

7.2 Coaches, Officials & Volunteers

  • Treat all individuals with respect and fairness
  • Encourage inclusive participation
  • Challenge inappropriate behaviour
  • Report any concerns

7.3 Members and Participants

  • Respect others and their differences
  • Follow the Code of Conduct
  • Report any concerns or incidents

  

8. Inclusive Practices

The Association will:

  • Encourage participation from underrepresented groups
  • Make reasonable adjustments for individuals with disabilities
  • Ensure facilities and activities are as accessible as possible
  • Use inclusive and respectful language in all communications
  • Consider diversity in event planning and delivery

  

9. Reporting Concerns

Any individual who experiences or witnesses discrimination or exclusion should:

  1. Report the concern to a Committee member or the Designated Safeguarding Officer      (DSO)
  2. Provide details of the incident
  3. Be assured the matter will be handled confidentially and sensitively

Reports will be managed in line with the Safeguarding Policy where appropriate.

  

10. Complaints and Disciplinary Action

  • All complaints will be taken seriously and investigated appropriately
  • Appropriate action will be taken, which may include warnings, suspension, or removal from the Association
  • Serious incidents may be referred to relevant authorities

  

11. Training and Awareness

The Association will:

  • Promote awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Provide guidance and training where appropriate
  • Encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement

  

12. Monitoring and Review

  • This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if required
  • Feedback from members will be encouraged to improve inclusivity
  • Any incidents will be used to inform future improvements

This policy should be read alongside:

  • Code of Conduct
