1. Introduction

The Jersey Horse Association (the ‘Association’) is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone involved in equestrian activities.


This Code of Conduct outlines the standards of behaviour expected from all individuals involved with the Association. It supports our Safeguarding and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion policies and helps ensure the welfare and wellbeing of all participants.

  

2. Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to:

  • All members and participants
  • Coaches, officials, and volunteers
  • Committee members and event organisers
  • Parents, guardians, and carers
  • Spectators and visitors

It applies at all Association activities, events, competitions, training sessions, and online interactions.

  

3. Core Values

All individuals are expected to uphold the following values:

  • Respect  – Treat everyone with dignity and courtesy
  • Safety  – Prioritise the welfare of people and horses
  • Inclusion  – Promote equality and welcome diversity
  • Integrity  – Act honestly and responsibly
  • Accountability  – Take responsibility for actions and behaviour

  

4. Expected Standards of Behaviour

All individuals must:

  • Treat others with respect, fairness, and dignity at all times
  • Promote a positive and supportive environment
  • Follow all safeguarding procedures and guidance
  • Respect personal boundaries and obtain consent where appropriate
  • Use appropriate language and behaviour, both in person and online
  • Follow instructions from coaches, officials, and organisers
  • Take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others
  • Respect horses, equipment, and facilities
  • Report any concerns about safety, welfare, or behaviour

  

5. Safeguarding Responsibilities

In line with the Safeguarding Policy:

  • The welfare of children, young people, and adults at risk is paramount
  • Abuse, neglect, bullying, or exploitation will not be tolerated
  • Concerns must be reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO)
  • Individuals must maintain appropriate boundaries at all times
  • Avoid being alone with a child or vulnerable adult where possible
  • Follow guidance on physical contact, communication, and supervision

  

6. Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

All individuals must:

  • Treat everyone equally, regardless of background or personal characteristics
  • Not engage in discrimination, harassment, or exclusion
  • Respect differences in ability, experience, culture, and identity
  • Challenge inappropriate or discriminatory behaviour where safe to do so

  

7. Behaviour That Will Not Be Tolerated

The following behaviours are unacceptable:

  • Bullying, intimidation, or harassment
  • Discrimination of any kind
  • Abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect)
  • Inappropriate relationships or contact
  • Use of offensive, abusive, or discriminatory language
  • Unsafe behaviour that puts others or horses at risk
  • Ignoring safeguarding rules or guidance
  • Misuse of social media or inappropriate online behaviour
  • Damage to property or facilities

  

8. Online and Social Media Conduct

All individuals must:

  • Use respectful and appropriate language online
  • Not share images or information of others without consent
  • Not engage in private messaging with under-18s unless appropriate and      authorised
  • Use official communication channels where required
  • Represent the Association positively

  

9. Parents, Guardians & Carers

Parents and carers are expected to:

  • Support the Association’s policies and procedures
  • Encourage respectful behaviour from children
  • Ensure children understand and follow this Code of Conduct
  • Provide relevant medical and wellbeing information where necessary
  • Communicate appropriately with coaches and organisers

  

10. Coaches, Officials & Volunteers

In addition to the above, they must:

  • Act as positive role models
  • Maintain  professional boundaries at all times
  • Follow safeguarding and safe recruitment practices
  • Ensure activities are inclusive and accessible
  • Challenge and report poor practice

  

11. Reporting Concerns

If you witness or experience behaviour that breaches this Code:

  1. Report the concern to a Committee member or the Designated Safeguarding Officer
  2. Provide clear and accurate information
  3. Concerns will be handled confidentially and appropriately

Immediate danger: Call 999

  

12. Breaches of the Code of Conduct

Failure to comply with this Code may result in:

  • Verbal or written warning
  • Removal from an activity or event
  • Suspension or termination of membership
  • Referral to relevant authorities where appropriate

All actions will be proportionate and in line with Association policies.

  

13. Acceptance

All individuals involved with the Jersey Horse Association are expected to:

  • Read and understand this Code of Conduct
  • Agree to abide by its principles
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment
